Hip Hop Legs and Paul Simon Runs: A Beginner's Guide to Working Out in NYC

September 16, 2016

I spend a lot of my time trying to go to yoga. About 50% of the time I am successful. The other 50% of the time I show up sweating after running as fast as I can to get there 5 minutes late (because of train or sleeping problems) and can't get in because "first breathing is over, sorry." Going to yoga is great. Almost going to yoga is demoralizing. So I've decided to stop trying!

Here is what I've been doing instead:

  • Hip-Hop! Yesterday, I found this great dance studio on ClassPass (which I strongly endorse) that was offering a beginning hip hop class...so I took it! We learned 3 whole 8-counts. I mastered one of them! The one I mastered involved slapping your thighs 6 times and now my legs look like this:

Yes, I've been applying Arnica Gel to my hip hop bruises and I'll be back in on amateur dancing scene in no time.

  • Running! There are two things I like about running here: my "Running in New York" playlist and Central Park. Obvious Child by Paul Simon has been on every playlist I've made in the past month...so this is what New York sounds like to me:

Paul Simon's official music video for 'Obvious Child'. Click to listen to Paul Simon on Spotify: http://smarturl.it/PaulSimonSpotify?IQid=PSOC As featured on The Essential Paul Simon.

And this is what it looks like:

Out of nowhere Central Park just has these cool looking places I had no idea existed! And I'm still enough of a newbie to stop and take a panorama.

  • Trying to do handstands without the wall!

So far, this has been very scary and unsuccessful.
